1. Mahakaleshwar Temple (Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga)
The most important temple in Ujjain and one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. The presiding deity is Lord Mahakal — Shiva as the Lord of Time and Death. The Shivalinga here is Swayambhu (self-manifested) and is the only south-facing (Dakshinamukhi) Jyotirlinga among the twelve. Famous for the Bhasma Aarti — a pre-dawn ritual at 4 AM using sacred ash. 2. Kal Bhairav Temple
Kal Bhairav is the fierce guardian deity (Kotwal) of Ujjain. This ancient temple is famous for its unique offering ritual — liquor (sharab) is offered to the deity, which the idol miraculously absorbs. The temple is 4 km from Mahakaleshwar. Timings: 6 AM – 10 PM.
3. Harsiddhi Mata Temple
One of the 51 Shakti Peethas of India. According to legend, the elbow of Goddess Sati fell here after her body was dismembered by Vishnu’s Sudarshana Chakra. The temple has two famous oil-lit lamp columns (deep mala) that are lit during Navratri. 1 km from Mahakaleshwar. Timings: 5 AM – 9 PM.
4. Mangalnath Temple
Believed to be the birthplace of the planet Mars (Mangal Graha) according to the Matsya Purana. Located on the banks of the Shipra River, 7 km from Mahakaleshwar. Especially significant for those undergoing Mangal Dosh remedies. Timings: 5 AM – 8 PM.
5. Sandipani Ashram
The gurukul where Lord Krishna, his brother Balaram, and his childhood friend Sudama received education from Guru Sandipani. The ashram contains the ancient slate on which the syllables taught by Sandipani are inscribed. 3 km from Mahakaleshwar. Timings: 8 AM – 6 PM.
6. Ram Ghat
The most sacred bathing ghat on the Shipra River. Ram Ghat hosts the Simhastha Kumbh Mela every 12 years. The evening Sandhya Aarti at Ram Ghat (7 PM daily) is a spectacular ritual with lamps and bhajans — a must-see for every visitor. 1 km from Mahakaleshwar.
7. Gadkalika Temple
Ancient Shakti shrine. The great Sanskrit poet Kalidasa is said to have received the goddess’s blessings here, transforming him from an illiterate shepherd into one of India’s greatest poets. 2 km from Mahakaleshwar.
8. Chintaman Ganesh Temple
One of the most ancient Ganesh temples in India. Chintaman means “one who removes worries.” Located near Fatehabad, 6 km from central Ujjain. Timings: 5 AM – 8 PM.
