There is no flight into Ujjain itself, so you fly Delhi to Indore (IDR) and drive the last 60-odd km. About 9–10 non-stop flights a day link Delhi and Indore on IndiGo, Air India and Air India Express, taking roughly 1h 25m to 1h 45m. From the airport, Mahakaleshwar is about 1–1.5 hours by road.
Landing at Indore airport? Book your airport pickup to Ujjain / Omkareshwar and your stay
This page is written for pilgrims and families who want the Delhi leg, the airport exit and the Ujjain drive to fit together without wasted hours. Timings below are scheduled times for late September 2026. Airlines move flights around at the winter schedule change in late October, so treat them as a planning guide and confirm on the airline’s site before you pay.

Airlines on the Delhi–Indore route
| Airline | Approx. non-stops per day | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| IndiGo | About 4 | Runs the earliest morning departure (04:55 from Delhi). Useful if you want a full first day in Ujjain. |
| Air India | About 4 | Second morning option landing around 06:55, plus the latest confirmed evening flight back (21:00). |
| Air India Express | 1–2 | Adds seats on busy days; compare its baggage rules before booking. |
You can check IndiGo’s live schedule and fare calendar on its Delhi to Indore route page. Some schedule sites also list a late-night IndiGo departure from Indore around 23:15, but we could not confirm it on the live departure board, so do not plan a return around it without checking.
Delhi to Ujjain flight ticket price: what actually moves the fare
We do not publish a fixed fare, because Delhi–Indore prices change daily with demand and no single number stays true for long. What we can tell you is how the fare typically behaves on this route, so you know when to book.
- Competition helps. With three airlines and around ten daily flights, Delhi–Indore is usually more competitive than single-airline routes into Indore. Comparing two or three departures on the same day often shows a noticeable spread.
- Timing of the flight. The very early 04:55 departure and late-evening flights are sometimes priced differently from mid-morning ones. Flex your time before you flex your date.
- Religious calendar. Fares climb around Mahashivratri (Saturday, 6 March 2027), Shravan Mondays (roughly July–August) and, above all, Simhastha 2028, which runs from 27 March to 27 May 2028.
- Fare type. A cheaper “saver” fare often carries tighter baggage and change rules. Families carrying puja items and extra luggage should compare the total, not only the base fare.
| When you travel | Typical demand | Booking-window advice (as of 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Regular weekdays | Moderate | Booking about 3–6 weeks ahead usually gives a good choice of flights. |
| Long weekends and school holidays | High | Book 6–8 weeks ahead; morning flights fill first. |
| Mahashivratri, Shravan Mondays | Very high | Book as soon as your dates are firm, and book your Ujjain stay at the same time. |
| Simhastha 2028 (27 Mar – 27 May 2028) | Extreme | Plan months ahead; expect heavy road traffic on the Indore–Ujjain highway too. |
Can a Delhi flight get you to Bhasma Aarti the same morning?
No. The first Delhi flight lands at 06:25. Add time to leave the aircraft, collect bags and drive about 1–1.5 hours, and you reach Ujjain around 8:30 at the earliest. Bhasma Aarti takes place before dawn, and devotees need to report well ahead of it, so the morning flight is simply too late.
The practical answer is to fly one day earlier. The good news is that the 04:55 departure turns that “extra” day into a proper temple day: you can be in Ujjain by breakfast, do regular darshan, walk Mahakal Lok, rest, and be ready for the pre-dawn aarti the next morning. Bhasma Aarti entry needs a prior booking, so secure that before you lock the flight.
Getting from Indore airport to Mahakaleshwar
The drive runs from the airport onto the Indore–Ujjain road via Sanwer and into Ujjain, about 60–62 km in total. In normal traffic it takes about 1–1.5 hours; festival days take longer. Uber runs 24/7 pickups at IDR, and many pilgrims pre-book a cab so a driver is waiting at arrivals. See our Indore airport to Ujjain taxi page for pickup options and the distance and route guide for the road itself. If this is your first time at IDR, the Indore airport guide covers terminals, exits and facilities.
A 2-day Delhi–Ujjain plan built around the flight times
| When | Plan |
|---|---|
| Day 1, 04:55 | Depart Delhi on the first IndiGo flight (or take Air India landing about 06:55). |
| Day 1, 06:25–07:15 | Land at IDR, collect bags, meet your cab. |
| Day 1, ~08:30 | Reach Ujjain, check in, freshen up. |
| Day 1, late morning | General darshan at Mahakaleshwar and Mahakal Lok. |
| Day 1, evening | Ram Ghat on the Shipra, early dinner, early night. |
| Day 2, pre-dawn | Bhasma Aarti (pre-booked). |
| Day 2, day | Other Ujjain temples at a relaxed pace, lunch, rest. |
| Day 2, ~17:30 | Leave Ujjain for IDR to make an evening flight, such as the 21:00 Air India departure. |
If you only have one night, keep the same shape but take a mid-afternoon return on Day 2. Leaving Ujjain by early afternoon keeps the highway stress low.
Best return flight window from Indore to Delhi
Evening departures suit most pilgrims. They leave the whole morning after Bhasma Aarti free and still get you home the same night. Build in the drive (1–1.5 hours, more at peak times) and reach the airport comfortably ahead of departure. IDR has been open 24 hours since April 2026 and now runs two terminals, so check your terminal on the boarding pass or airline SMS before you set off from Ujjain.
Arriving at Indore on a Delhi flight
Most Delhi flights land in the morning, which is the easiest time to arrive at IDR. Cabs are plentiful, the highway is moving, and you reach Ujjain before the heat of the day. Uber pickups run at IDR round the clock. If you would rather not negotiate at the kerb, a pre-booked driver can meet you with a name board. Keep your phone charged and your driver’s number saved before you board in Delhi. With two terminals operating since April 2026, it also helps to message your driver the terminal printed on your boarding pass.
Delhi-specific tips
- In the winter fog season, early-morning departures from Delhi can be delayed. If Bhasma Aarti is booked for the next morning, that is one more reason to arrive a day early.
- Schedules change in late October each year. Recheck your flight number after booking.
- If Delhi–Indore is sold out, the flights hub lists every direct route into Indore, which helps if you can start from another city.
Not flying? Other ways to plan the trip

- Ujjain has no commercial flights as of 2026. For the status of the proposed new airport, see the Ujjain airport project timeline.
