Chennai to Ujjain by flight means IndiGo’s non-stop from Chennai to Indore (IDR), about 1h 55m–2h 15m, then roughly 60 km by road to Ujjain. There is about one flight a day, but its timing depends on the weekday: some days it lands before noon, others at 20:30. Check your date before planning anything else.
Landing at Indore airport? Book your airport pickup to Ujjain / Omkareshwar and your stay
Most routes into Indore run at the same time every day. Chennai doesn’t, and that catches travellers out. A Tamil Nadu family that books a Saturday flight expecting to arrive in the morning can end up landing at night. This page explains the two patterns seen in the late-September 2026 schedule and how to plan an Ujjain trip around each.
The two Chennai–Indore timing patterns
| Morning pattern | Evening pattern | |
|---|---|---|
| Departs Chennai (MAA) | About 09:30 | About 18:15 |
| Flying time | About 1h 55m | About 2h 15m |
| Arrives Indore (IDR) | About 11:25 | About 20:30 (IndiGo 6E489 on 27 Sep 2026) |
| Reach Ujjain | About 13:30 | About 22:30 or later |
| Day 1 darshan? | Yes, in the evening | No; rest and start the next day |
The flight number and timing change by weekday, so open IndiGo’s Chennai to Indore route page and check the exact date you want. If your dates are flexible, choose a morning-pattern day. It gives you an extra half-day in Ujjain for the same airfare effort.
How to check which pattern your date has
- Search Chennai (MAA) to Indore (IDR) for your preferred date on the airline’s site, and filter for non-stop flights only.
- Note the departure time. A morning departure means you can do darshan on Day 1; an evening departure means Day 1 is a travel day.
- Check the two or three days either side of your date. Because the timing varies by weekday, a one-day shift often changes the pattern.
- Repeat the search for your return date. The return timing varies too, and it decides how late you can stay in Ujjain.
- Only then book your Bhasma Aarti and hotel nights, and fit them around the flight pattern you have chosen.
Search results showing a much longer journey time, such as five hours or more, are connections, not the non-stop. On those days there may be no direct flight at all.
Return flights: also day-dependent
| Return pattern | Departs Indore | Leave Ujjain by (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Afternoon | 15:55 (some days) | 12:30–13:00 |
| Night | 21:10 (IndiGo 6E756 on 27 Sep 2026) | 18:00 |
The night return is kinder, because it gives you the whole day after Bhasma Aarti. With the afternoon return, you have the morning after the aarti and must leave around lunchtime. Either works; just know which one you have booked.
Where Bhasma Aarti fits
No Chennai flight gets you to Ujjain early enough for a same-morning Bhasma Aarti, which happens before dawn. How soon after arrival you can attend depends on the pattern:
- Morning-pattern arrival: You are in Ujjain by early afternoon, have a restful evening and a full night’s sleep, so the next morning’s aarti is realistic.
- Evening-pattern arrival: You reach Ujjain around 22:30 or later. A pre-dawn aarti a few hours later is not sensible, especially for elders. Book it for the second morning, or stay near the airport on arrival night and drive in the next day. See hotels near Indore airport.
Book the aarti before the flight. If the aarti date you want is gone, move the flight, not the other way round.
Sample itineraries
Morning arrival, night return (2 nights): Land around 11:25 on Day 1, lunch, reach Ujjain by mid-afternoon and do evening darshan and Mahakal Lok. On Day 2, attend Bhasma Aarti, rest, then visit Kal Bhairav, Harsiddhi and Ram Ghat. On Day 3, have a relaxed morning, perhaps with Sandipani Ashram, and leave Ujjain around 18:00 for a 21:10 flight.
Evening arrival, afternoon return (2 nights): Land at 20:30 on Day 1 and drive to Ujjain, or sleep near the airport. Day 2 is for general darshan and rest. On Day 3, attend Bhasma Aarti, have breakfast, check out and leave Ujjain by about 12:30 for a 15:55 flight. This is tight but manageable.
Adding Omkareshwar (3 nights): Omkareshwar is about 85 km from Indore airport, roughly 2–2.5 hours each way. Many South Indian pilgrims try to cover both Madhya Pradesh Jyotirlingas in one trip. Give it its own day. See Indore airport to Omkareshwar.
Booking the Chennai–Indore fare
With roughly one flight a day, and a different one depending on the weekday, seat supply is limited. We don’t have verified fare figures to share, and fares on thin routes move quickly. Practical advice:
- Book about 6–8 weeks ahead for normal dates.
- Be flexible by a day. Moving your trip by 24 hours can switch you from a night arrival to a morning one.
- Festival periods need the earliest booking of all: Mahashivratri on 6 March 2027, the Shravan month in roughly July–August, and Simhastha from 27 March to 27 May 2028.
- If the non-stop doesn’t suit your dates, one-stop options through Bengaluru, which has three daily non-stops to Indore, or through Mumbai are worth comparing. See the Bengaluru route and the flights hub.
If you land at 20:30
Evening-pattern arrivals are perfectly workable with a little preparation. Eat before or during the flight, since hotel kitchens in Ujjain may be closing by the time you check in. Share your flight number with the driver so they can track any delay. Tell the hotel you will arrive around 22:30. Keep a small overnight bag separate so the first night doesn’t involve unpacking everything. With elderly parents, spending the first night near the airport and driving to Ujjain after breakfast is often the calmer choice.
From Indore airport to Ujjain
From IDR, the drive follows the Indore–Ujjain road through Sanwer to Ujjain, about 60–62 km to Mahakaleshwar and roughly 1–1.5 hours. At night it is often quicker; on festival days it is slower. Uber operates 24/7 at IDR. For a 20:30 arrival, we recommend a pre-booked driver, as official prepaid-taxi availability to Ujjain at night could not be confirmed. Arrange one on our Indore airport taxi page. The distance guide covers the route.
Tips for pilgrims from Tamil Nadu
- Language. Hindi is the main language in Ujjain. A driver or hotel that can help with directions makes the first day easier, and it is worth mentioning when you book.
- Food. South Indian breakfast is available in Ujjain and Indore, but choice is narrower than at home. Families with strict dietary needs often carry some ready-to-eat food.
- Weather. Ujjain winter mornings, from December to February, are much colder than Chennai’s. Pack a warm layer for Bhasma Aarti.
- Terminal. Indore has run two terminals since April 2026. Check your boarding pass. Our Indore airport guide covers both.
- Schedule changes. Winter timings take effect in late October. On a day-varying route, recheck a week before travel.
