Ahmedabad to Ujjain by flight is a short hop: IndiGo flies non-stop from Ahmedabad to Indore (IDR) twice a day in about 1h 10mβ1h 25m. The morning flight leaves at 06:55 and lands at 08:10. The last flight home leaves Indore at 21:50. From IDR to Mahakaleshwar is about 60 km, roughly 1β1.5 hours by road.

Both Ahmedabad flights use the ATR 72, a smaller turboprop than the jets on Delhi or Mumbai routes. That affects cabin baggage and, at Indore, possibly which terminal you use. The good news is the timing: a morning arrival and a late-evening return give Gujarat pilgrims a very efficient weekend. The details below are from the late-September 2026 schedule.
AhmedabadβIndore flights at a glance
| Detail | Ahmedabad (AMD) β Indore (IDR) |
|---|---|
| Airline and aircraft | IndiGo, ATR 72 turboprop |
| Flights per day | 2 each way |
| Flying time | About 1h 10m β 1h 25m (IndiGo lists 1h 15m) |
| Morning flight to Indore | 6E7173: departs AMD 06:55, arrives IDR 08:10 |
| Last flight back to Ahmedabad | 6E7168: departs IDR 21:50 |

What flying an ATR means for you
- Cabin bags. Overhead space on a turboprop is tighter than on a jet. Pack cabin bags small and soft. A hard trolley that fits on a jet may be taken at the aircraft door and placed in the hold.
- Puja items and prasad. Put liquids such as ghee, oil or bottled Shipra water in checked baggage, and pack them well.
- Terminal at Indore. Indore has run two terminals since April 2026. Sources disagree on whether ATR flights use Terminal 1 or Terminal 2, so read your boarding pass, tell your driver the terminal, and check it again for the return. Our Indore airport guide explains the layout.
Bhasma Aarti: arrive the day before
The 08:10 arrival lands several hours after Bhasma Aarti, which takes place before dawn, so same-morning attendance is not possible from Ahmedabad. The morning flight is ideal for the day before, though. You are in Ujjain by about 10:00, can do general darshan before lunch, rest in the afternoon, and be fresh for the aarti the next morning. Book the aarti before you book the flight.
A two-day Gujarat weekend
| Time | Saturday | Sunday |
|---|---|---|
| Early morning | Fly AMD 06:55 β IDR 08:10 | Bhasma Aarti (pre-booked) |
| Morning | Drive to Ujjain, arriving around 10:00; check in | Rest; breakfast |
| Midday | General darshan, Mahakal Lok | Kal Bhairav, Harsiddhi, Sandipani Ashram |
| Afternoon | Rest at the hotel | Lunch; check out |
| Evening | Ram Ghat on the Shipra; early night | Leave Ujjain around 18:30 for the 21:50 flight |
Because the return is so late, you rarely need to hurry on Sunday. If Sunday-evening traffic into Indore is heavy, you still have a margin.
Should you fly or drive from Ahmedabad?
Many Gujarat families drive or take the train to Ujjain, and for a large group in one vehicle, road travel can make sense. Flying wins when time matters. A short flight plus about an hour and a half by road usually gets you there far faster than a long day on the highway. It also leaves you rested for darshan, which matters for senior citizens. The real cost of flying is the early start for the 06:55 departure, since you need to be at Ahmedabad airport well before that. If an early start doesn’t suit your group, take the second flight of the day and plan darshan for the following morning.
Ahmedabad to Ujjain flight ticket price: booking tips
We don’t publish a fare for this route, because no verified figure holds for more than a few days. Two small aircraft a day mean limited seats, so the fare can move quickly once bookings build. Useful habits:
| Trip type | When to book (typical, 2026) |
|---|---|
| Ordinary weekend | About 3β6 weeks ahead |
| Navratri, Diwali, summer holidays | 6β8 weeks ahead, as Gujarat travel peaks |
| Mahashivratri (6 March 2027), Shravan Mondays | As soon as dates are fixed |
| Simhastha 2028 (27 March β 27 May 2028) | Months ahead; book the hotel at the same time |
If both non-stops are full, the flights hub shows other direct routes into Indore. Mumbai, for example, has several flights a day and a wider choice of times.
Group yatras from Gujarat: plan around a small aircraft
Society groups, mandals and extended families often travel to Mahakal together. On this route, that needs a little extra care. An ATR 72 carries far fewer passengers than a jet, and there are only two flights a day. A group of fifteen or twenty can take up a large share of one flight’s seats, and the last few seats in a cheaper fare bucket can run out part-way through the booking. Our suggestions:
- Fix the group size early and book as soon as the date is agreed, ideally 6β8 weeks ahead.
- If the group will not fit on one flight, split it across the two daily flights and set a meeting point in Ujjain rather than at the airport.
- Book one larger vehicle, such as a Tempo Traveller, from IDR instead of several small cabs. The group stays together and luggage is easier to manage.
- Check each person’s checked-baggage allowance. Groups tend to carry more puja material and bring back more prasad than individual travellers.
Your first hour after landing at 08:10
Switch on your phone as soon as you land and message your driver the terminal printed on your boarding pass. Collect your bags, meet the driver at the arrival exit, and head for the Ujjain road. Most people have left home before dawn to catch the 06:55 flight, so plan a short breakfast stop on the way. Indori poha at a roadside stall is a popular choice. You will still reach Ujjain in good time for late-morning darshan.
Indore airport to the temple
From IDR you drive onto the IndoreβUjjain road through Sanwer and into Ujjain, about 60β62 km in all. After the 08:10 landing you will usually meet the morning traffic heading out of Indore rather than into it. Uber operates at IDR 24/7. A pre-booked car through our airport to Ujjain taxi service means someone is already waiting at arrivals. The distance and route page has more on the road.
Best return window
The 21:50 departure is the latest of the Ahmedabad options and the one most pilgrims use. Leave Ujjain by about 18:30. On Sundays and festival evenings, leave by 18:00. If you want to add Omkareshwar, which is about 85 km from Indore airport, take a third day. It does not fit comfortably between Bhasma Aarti and a same-day flight. See Indore airport to Omkareshwar for the drive.
