From Bengaluru, you reach Ujjain by flying non-stop to Indore (IDR) and driving about 60 km. IndiGo operates three daily non-stops, each about 1h 55m–2h 10m. The first lands at 09:25 and the last evening flight back leaves Indore at 21:40. With the drive, allow roughly half a day from your Bengaluru doorstep to Mahakaleshwar.
Landing at Indore airport? Book your airport pickup to Ujjain / Omkareshwar and your stay
Bengaluru is one of the longer direct routes into Indore, and its timings shape the trip differently from Delhi or Mumbai. There is no dawn arrival, so the first day is mostly travel, and a one-night trip feels rushed. This guide sets out the flights as scheduled in late September 2026, how to use them, and a three-day plan that many South Indian pilgrims prefer.

Which arrival should you choose?
| Arrival at IDR | Reach Ujjain around | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 09:25 (morning) | 11:00–11:30 | Afternoon general darshan on Day 1; aarti on Day 2 |
| Midday or afternoon flights | Evening | Travellers who want a normal wake-up; temple the next day |
| About 22:45 (night) | Past midnight, or stay near IDR | Leaving Bengaluru after work on a Friday |
The 09:25 flight is the one most pilgrims pick, but remember the other end. Bengaluru’s airport is a long drive from most of the city, so a 09:25 arrival in Indore still means leaving home very early. Factor that in if you are travelling with children or elders.
Bhasma Aarti from Bengaluru: plan on a second morning
No Bengaluru flight gets you to Ujjain before dawn. Even the first arrival reaches the temple town late in the morning, many hours after Bhasma Aarti. Build the trip so that the aarti falls on your second morning in Ujjain, and book it in advance. That gives you a buffer if the flight is delayed and a full night’s sleep before a very early start.
If you land on the 22:45 flight, do not try to drive to Ujjain and attend Bhasma Aarti a few hours later. Stay near the airport or drive to Ujjain and sleep in, then keep the aarti for the following morning. Our guide to hotels near Indore airport explains when an airport-side night makes sense.
Fares: how to book the Bengaluru route well
Bengaluru–Indore is effectively a one-airline route on most days, so there is less head-to-head competition than on Delhi or Mumbai. We have no verified fare band to publish, and any number would date quickly. Practical guidance instead:
- Book earlier than you would for a metro-to-metro trip. About 4–8 weeks ahead is a sensible window for normal dates, because three flights a day do not leave much slack.
- Use the fare calendar. Shifting by a day, especially away from Friday and Sunday, often opens up better options.
- Festival dates fill quickly. Mahashivratri falls on 6 March 2027, and Simhastha runs from 27 March to 27 May 2028. Book those trips as soon as leave is approved.
- If direct seats are gone, a connection via Delhi or Mumbai is possible, since both have frequent Indore flights, but it adds hours. See the flights hub for those routes.
Weather shock: pack for Malwa, not Bengaluru
Bengaluru’s mild weather can catch travellers out in Ujjain, which has far sharper seasons. Summer, roughly April to June, is very hot in the Malwa region, and midday temple queues on bare stone can be tiring. Winter mornings, around December and January, are properly cold, and Bhasma Aarti happens at the coldest hour of the day. A few practical adjustments:
- In winter, carry a warm shawl or jacket in your cabin bag. You will want it at the Indore arrival exit if you land at night, and again before dawn at the temple.
- In summer, plan darshan for early morning or evening and rest indoors between about noon and 4 pm.
- In the monsoon, from about July to September, the Indore–Ujjain road can slow down in heavy rain. Leave extra time on your return day so you do not risk the 21:40 flight.
October to February is generally the most comfortable window for a first visit from the south, outside the big festival peaks.
Indore airport to Mahakaleshwar
From IDR the road heads onto the Indore–Ujjain highway via Sanwer, about 60–62 km in all. It usually takes 1–1.5 hours and longer on festival days and Monday evenings in Shravan. Uber runs pickups at IDR 24/7. For a family arriving with luggage after a two-hour flight, a pre-booked car is simpler. We can arrange one through our airport pickup service. The distance page covers the road in more detail.
Three-day plan for Bengaluru pilgrims
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Fly to IDR, landing at 09:25. Drive to Ujjain and check in by about noon. After a rest, go for evening general darshan and walk Mahakal Lok. |
| Day 2 | Bhasma Aarti before dawn (pre-booked). Rest mid-morning. In the afternoon visit Kal Bhairav, Harsiddhi and Ram Ghat, then have an early night. |
| Day 3 | Check out after breakfast. Either drive to Omkareshwar and return to IDR for a later flight, or head straight to IDR for a daytime departure. The last flight home is at 21:40. |
Omkareshwar, the other Jyotirlinga in the region, is about 85 km from Indore airport, roughly 2–2.5 hours by road. Combining it with a same-day flight is tight, so many families add a fourth day. Details are on Indore airport to Omkareshwar.
Return window and airport tips
The 21:40 departure lets you spend most of your last day in Ujjain. Aim to leave the temple town by about 18:30 on a normal day. IDR has operated 24 hours a day since April 2026 and uses two terminals. Which flights use which terminal is not consistently reported, so trust your boarding pass. Our Indore airport guide covers the layout and facilities. Winter schedule changes arrive in late October, so recheck your flight time a week before travel.
One more Bengaluru-specific point: the evening flight home lands late at night, and the drive from Bengaluru airport back into the city can be long. If you have work the next morning, the earlier daytime flights on Day 3 are worth the shorter Ujjain stay.
