The only non-stop from Kolkata towards Ujjain is IndiGo’s evening flight to Indore (IDR). It leaves Kolkata at 18:55 and lands at 21:20 after about 2 hours 25 minutes. The return leaves Indore at 20:30. From IDR it is about 60 km, roughly 1–1.5 hours, to Mahakaleshwar. Ujjain itself has no scheduled flights.
Landing at Indore airport? Book your airport pickup to Ujjain / Omkareshwar and your stay
A single daily flight in each direction, both in the evening, makes Kolkata one of the simplest routes to plan and one of the least forgiving. Miss it or find it full and there is no second non-stop that day. This page covers how to make the one flight work, where to sleep on arrival night, and when a connection makes more sense. Timings are from the late-September 2026 schedule.

Landing at 21:20: drive on or stay near the airport?
This is the main decision on the Kolkata route. After a 21:20 landing and baggage, you are usually on the road around 22:00. That puts you in Ujjain close to midnight.
| Option | Arrive in bed | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drive straight to Ujjain | Around midnight or later | Wake up in Ujjain; full next day for darshan | Late check-in; tiring for elders and children |
| Stay near Indore airport | Around 22:30 | Short transfer, proper sleep, daylight drive | Lose the next morning to the drive |
If you pre-book a car and your hotel has confirmed a late check-in, driving on is fine for most adults. Uber also operates at IDR around the clock. For families, the airport-side night is usually the calmer choice. Our guide to hotels near Indore airport explains what to look for. Either way, arrange your pickup in advance through our Indore airport taxi page rather than hunting for a cab at 22:00. We could not confirm an official prepaid-taxi service to Ujjain at night.
Bhasma Aarti timing for Kolkata travellers
Bhasma Aarti starts before dawn. With a 21:20 arrival, booking it for the very next morning means at best two or three hours of sleep after a late drive, and no buffer if the flight is late. We don’t recommend it. Book the aarti for your second morning in Ujjain. The first full day then becomes your general-darshan and rest day, and you go to the aarti properly rested.
Sample plan: two nights, Kolkata to Ujjain and back
| When | What |
|---|---|
| Day 1, 18:55 | Fly Kolkata–Indore (6E798). Eat before boarding. |
| Day 1, 21:20 | Land at IDR. Meet your driver and reach Ujjain by around midnight, or sleep near the airport. |
| Day 2 | Late start. General darshan at Mahakaleshwar, Mahakal Lok in the afternoon, Ram Ghat in the evening. Early night. |
| Day 3, pre-dawn | Bhasma Aarti (pre-booked). |
| Day 3, daytime | Rest, Kal Bhairav and Harsiddhi, lunch. |
| Day 3, ~17:30 | Leave Ujjain for IDR in time for the 20:30 flight home. |
This is the shortest plan that includes Bhasma Aarti without cutting sleep. Add a night if you want Omkareshwar, which is about 85 km from Indore airport and needs most of a day. See Indore airport to Omkareshwar.
Booking the Kolkata–Indore fare
With one flight a day in each direction, all the seats on this route sit on a single aircraft. Once the cheaper fare buckets go, prices can only climb, and when it is full, there is no other non-stop. We don’t have verified fare figures to share, but the booking pattern is clear:
- Book about 6–8 weeks ahead for normal dates, earlier than you would for Delhi or Mumbai routes.
- Durga Puja and Diwali holidays bring heavy travel out of Kolkata, and Mahashivratri (6 March 2027) and Shravan bring heavy travel into Ujjain. When your trip overlaps either, book as soon as your leave is sanctioned.
- Simhastha 2028 (27 March to 27 May 2028) will stretch every route into Indore. Plan that trip very early.
- If the non-stop is sold out, look at one-stop itineraries through a high-frequency Indore route such as Delhi or Mumbai. They take longer, but you get daytime arrivals and a wider choice of return times.
Is a connecting flight ever better from Kolkata?
Sometimes. The non-stop is quickest, but its evening timing costs you an evening at each end. A connection via Delhi, which has a flight landing in Indore at 06:25, or via Mumbai, which has an 08:30 arrival, can put you in Ujjain by late morning. That only works if you are willing to start from Kolkata very early or overnight. For senior citizens, the single non-stop plus a night near the airport is usually easier than a pre-dawn connection. Compare the total door-to-door time before you decide. Our flights hub lists all direct routes into Indore.
Coming from elsewhere in eastern India?
Pilgrims from Patna, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar and Guwahati often ask us for “their” direct flight to Indore. As of September 2026, none of these cities has a scheduled non-stop to Indore. IndiGo launched a Bhubaneswar–Indore service in 2025, but it no longer appears in current schedules, and the airline’s own Guwahati page says there is no direct Guwahati–Indore flight. Travellers from these cities need a one-stop itinerary. Kolkata’s evening non-stop is one possible connecting point. Delhi and Mumbai, with many more daily Indore flights, give more choice of timings. When you compare options, look at the layover length and the arrival time in Indore, not just the fare. A 21:20 arrival after a full day of connections is hard going for elderly travellers. If you are self-connecting on separate tickets, leave a generous gap, as a missed connection is not the airline’s responsibility.
From Indore airport to Mahakaleshwar
The route runs from IDR onto the Indore–Ujjain road through Sanwer and into Ujjain, about 60–62 km in total. At night the highway is quieter, and the drive often takes close to an hour. In daytime and on festival days, allow 1–1.5 hours or more. Road details are on Indore airport to Ujjain distance. Terminal and facility information, including the two-terminal set-up since April 2026 and 24-hour operations, is in our Indore airport guide.
Return: making the 20:30 flight
For the 20:30 departure, leaving Ujjain around 17:30 gives a sensible margin on a normal day. Leave earlier on Sundays, Mondays in Shravan and festival evenings, when traffic out of Ujjain builds. The flight reaches Kolkata late at night, so arrange your onward cab home in advance too.
