To fly from Mumbai to Ujjain, book Mumbai to Indore (IDR). Ujjain has no airport with scheduled flights. About seven non-stops a day leave Mumbai (BOM) on IndiGo and Air India, plus one or two IndiGo flights from Navi Mumbai. Flying time is about 1h 15mβ1h 40m, then roughly 1β1.5 hours by road to Mahakaleshwar.
Landing at Indore airport? Book your airport pickup to Ujjain / Omkareshwar and your stay
Mumbai sends more weekend pilgrims to Mahakal than almost any other city, and the flight schedule suits a short break well. You can leave after work on Friday and be back on Sunday night. The detail that matters is which of the two Mumbai airports you use and which Indore arrival you pick. Times below are the late-September 2026 schedule.
Mumbai (BOM) or Navi Mumbai (NMI)?
| Mumbai CSMIA (BOM) | Navi Mumbai (NMI) | |
|---|---|---|
| Airlines to Indore | IndiGo (about 5 a day), Air India (2 a day) | IndiGo (1β2 a day) |
| Best for | South Mumbai, western suburbs, Thane (west) | Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Kharghar, parts of Thane |
| Notable timing | First arrival at IDR 08:30; last departure from IDR 22:20 | Late-night arrival at IDR around 22:35 |
| Choice of flights | Wide; easy to rebook | Limited; fewer fallbacks |
Schedule sites list more Mumbai-region flights to Indore from late October 2026, including Air India Express from Navi Mumbai and Star Air from Mumbai. Neither was confirmed by the airlines when we checked, so treat them as possible extras, not something to plan around yet.

Why you cannot fly in the same morning as Bhasma Aarti
The earliest Mumbai flight lands at 08:30. By the time you reach Ujjain it is close to 10:30, and Bhasma Aarti finished hours before, since it is held before sunrise. So the rule for Mumbai flyers is simple: arrive the day before and sleep in Ujjain.
If you fly out on the late Navi Mumbai flight, you face a choice at about 22:35. You can drive straight to Ujjain and arrive past midnight, or sleep near the airport and drive after breakfast. With an early aarti booking the next morning, the late drive usually costs more sleep than it saves. Our page on hotels near Indore airport explains the overnight option.
What decides the Mumbai to Ujjain flight ticket price
We have no verified fare table for this route, and quoting one would mislead you, because MumbaiβIndore fares move with the day of the week. As a pattern, Friday evening and Sunday evening flights are the ones Mumbai weekenders chase, so they tend to cost more and sell out first. Tuesday to Thursday travel usually gives more choice.
- Book about 3β6 weeks ahead for ordinary dates, and earlier for long weekends.
- Check both airports. On some days a Navi Mumbai fare beats BOM, or the other way round.
- For Mahashivratri (6 March 2027), Shravan (roughly JulyβAugust) and Simhastha 2028 (27 March to 27 May 2028), book as soon as your dates are fixed.
Groups from Mumbai, such as housing-society yatras and office teams, should book in one transaction where possible, or at least on the same flight number. The remaining seats in the cheaper fare bucket can run out part-way through a large booking, so splitting a group of ten across two bookings is common and not a problem. Also compare checked-baggage allowances across fare types. Mumbai pilgrims often carry prasad and gifts home, and the return leg is where excess-baggage charges tend to appear.
Shravan, monsoon and Mumbai flights
Shravan, roughly July to August, is the busiest stretch of the year at Mahakaleshwar. The Monday processions (sawari) draw very large crowds. For Mumbai flyers it also falls in peak monsoon, when heavy rain in Mumbai can hold up departures and snarl the drive to the airport. Two habits help. First, prefer the morning flight into Indore over the last flight of the day, so a delay still leaves you options the same day. Second, keep a buffer night in Ujjain before any fixed booking such as Bhasma Aarti. If your aarti slot is for a Monday in Shravan, arriving on Saturday rather than Sunday is the safer choice.
After you land at IDR
Indore’s airport is compact. Since April 2026 the airport has run two terminals and operates round the clock. Sources disagree on which flights use which terminal, so read your boarding pass or the airline’s SMS and share the terminal with your driver. Uber pickups operate at IDR at all hours. Official prepaid-taxi arrangements for Ujjain could not be confirmed, so arrange your Ujjain cab in advance rather than relying on finding one at the kerb, especially on the late Navi Mumbai arrival.
The last 60 km: Indore airport to Mahakal
Mahakaleshwar is about 60β62 km from the airport, reached via the IndoreβUjjain road through Sanwer. Allow about 1β1.5 hours, and more during festivals. Uber operates round the clock at IDR, but for a late-night landing a pre-booked driver waiting at arrivals is less hassle. We arrange this on our airport pickup page. The route and distance guide covers the road in detail.
A Mumbai weekend plan: Friday night to Sunday night
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| Friday night | Fly from Navi Mumbai, land about 22:35. Sleep near IDR, or drive to Ujjain if you are not doing aarti on Saturday. |
| Saturday morning | Drive to Ujjain (about 1β1.5 h). Check in and do general darshan. |
| Saturday afternoon/evening | Mahakal Lok, Harsiddhi, Ram Ghat. Early dinner and early bed. |
| Sunday pre-dawn | Bhasma Aarti (booked in advance). |
| Sunday day | Rest, lunch, other temples in Ujjain. |
| Sunday ~19:30 | Leave Ujjain for IDR in time for the 22:20 IndiGo flight to Mumbai. |
Coming from BOM instead? Take the 08:30 arrival on Saturday, spend the day in Ujjain, and follow the same Sunday plan.
Adding Omkareshwar to a Mumbai trip
Many Mumbai families like to see both Jyotirlingas in Madhya Pradesh on the same trip. Omkareshwar is about 85 km from Indore airport, and the drive takes roughly 2β2.5 hours through a ghat section. It fits best as a separate day rather than squeezed between flights. See Indore airport to Omkareshwar for how to sequence it.
Best return window
With a 22:20 last departure to Mumbai, you can spend nearly the whole final day in Ujjain. Aim to leave Ujjain by about 19:00β19:30 on a normal evening, earlier on Sundays and festival days when the highway is busy. IDR has run two terminals since April 2026, so confirm yours on the boarding pass. Our Indore airport guide explains the layout. Other cities are on the flights hub.
