Pune to Ujjain by air means a non-stop flight from Pune (PNQ) to Indore (IDR), then a drive of about 1–1.5 hours. IndiGo and Air India Express run 3–4 flights a day, each about 1h 15m–1h 45m in the air. One lands at 02:30 and another at 06:40, so Pune has the only pre-dawn arrival into Indore.

That early arrival is the reason Pune travellers ask us one question more than any other: can the 1:10 am flight get me to Bhasma Aarti? The short answer is no, and the reasons are below, along with the flights that do work well. All timings reflect the late-September 2026 schedule and will be revised in late October.

| Non-stops per day | 3–4 |
| Flying time | About 1h 15m – 1h 45m (IndiGo lists 1h 20m) |

The 02:30 arrival and Bhasma Aarti: why we don’t recommend it
On paper, landing at 02:30 and driving about an hour to Ujjain looks as if it could just work for a pre-dawn aarti. In practice the margin is too thin:
- You still have to deplane, collect checked bags and find your cab in the middle of the night.
- The drive is about 60–62 km. Night roads are quieter, but a 1-hour estimate is a best case.
- Bhasma Aarti entry involves reporting early, queuing and security checks. Arriving straight off a night flight, with luggage in the car and no sleep, is not how most people want to experience it.
- Any delay at Pune turns the plan into a missed aarti with no fallback.
Use the night flight, if at all, as a cheap way to be in Ujjain early on the day before your aarti. Pre-book the pickup so a driver is waiting, check in to a hotel with an early check-in arranged, and sleep. Uber does run 24/7 at IDR, but at 02:30 a confirmed pickup is worth it. Our Indore airport pickup page handles night arrivals.
The better choice for most: the 06:40 arrival
Landing at 06:40 puts you in Ujjain at roughly 8:30–9:00 after a normal night’s sleep, apart from a very early alarm. That gives you a full day for general darshan, and you can book Bhasma Aarti for the next morning. Families with elderly parents usually find this the calmest option on the route.
Fares and when to book
We don’t list a price for Pune–Indore, because no verified fare figure holds steady for more than a few days. Here is how the route tends to behave:
| Situation | What to expect | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Night flight (01:10) | Often less popular than daytime flights | Worth comparing if you are fine arriving at 02:30 |
| Only 3–4 flights a day | Fewer seats than Delhi or Mumbai routes | Book about 4–6 weeks ahead on normal dates |
| Festival periods | Mahashivratri (6 March 2027), Shravan, Simhastha 2028 | Book once dates are fixed; secure your hotel too |
| Sold-out day | No direct seats left | Consider flying from Mumbai; see the Mumbai route |
Should Pune pilgrims fly from Mumbai instead?
Some Pune families drive to Mumbai to catch a flight, because Mumbai has roughly twice the number of daily non-stops to Indore. That trade-off rarely makes sense for a short Ujjain trip. The Pune–Mumbai drive adds several hours and road risk to a journey whose flight takes under 1.5 hours. It is worth considering only in two cases: when Pune–Indore is sold out on your date, or when you specifically need the 08:30 Mumbai arrival or the 22:20 Mumbai return. Otherwise the Pune non-stops, with a 06:40 morning arrival and a 22:10 evening return, cover the key timings well.
Night-flight checklist for Pune travellers
If you do take the 01:10 departure, these small things make the 02:30 arrival smoother:
- Share your flight number with your driver, not just the time, so they can track a delay.
- Carry a light shawl. Ujjain nights in winter are cold, and temple mornings even colder.
- Ask your Ujjain hotel for early check-in in writing. Standard check-in times are usually around midday, and a 03:30 arrival with no room is a long wait.
- Keep any traditional clothes you plan to wear at the temple in your hand baggage, in case the checked bag is slow to arrive.
- Check the terminal on your boarding pass. Indore has run two terminals since April 2026 and sources conflict on which flights use which.
From IDR to the temple
The road runs from the airport onto the Indore–Ujjain road via Sanwer. Mahakaleshwar is about 60–62 km away, which takes about 1–1.5 hours in normal traffic. Our distance guide explains the route, and the airport guide covers what to expect in the terminal, including the two-terminal setup since April 2026.
Sample plan: two days from Pune
Day 1. Take the 06:40 arrival. Meet your driver around 07:15 and reach Ujjain by about 09:00. Check in, then do general darshan and Mahakal Lok before the midday crowd. Rest in the afternoon, then spend the evening at Ram Ghat. Eat early and sleep early.
Day 2. Bhasma Aarti before dawn (pre-booked). Breakfast, then Kal Bhairav and Harsiddhi if you want them. After lunch, check out and rest. Leave Ujjain around 19:00–19:30 for the 22:10 IndiGo flight to Pune.
If you took the 02:30 night flight instead, Day 1 simply starts with sleep. Keep darshan for the afternoon. Travelling from another city as well? Every direct route into Indore is on our flights hub.
Flying with senior citizens from Pune
Many Pune bookings we see are for parents in their sixties and seventies. For them, the timing of the flight matters more than the fare. The 06:40 arrival means a pre-4 am wake-up in Pune, which some elders find harder than it sounds. If that is the case, consider flying on a later daytime flight, spending the first afternoon resting in Ujjain, and doing darshan the next day. Airlines provide wheelchair assistance on request; add it when you book rather than at the counter. Tell your driver in advance so the car can come to the nearest pickup point. When you book Bhasma Aarti for elderly parents, remember that it involves sitting for a long time early in the morning, so pack a warm layer and plan a quiet afternoon after it.
Return flight window
The 22:10 departure is the most useful return for Pune pilgrims, because it gives you the whole day after Bhasma Aarti. On weekends and festival evenings, add extra time for the highway into Indore. If your return date is flexible, flying back mid-week is usually easier on seat availability.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a direct flight from Pune to Ujjain?
No. Ujjain has no scheduled flights. Fly non-stop from Pune to Indore (IDR), about 1h 20m, then drive about 60 km to Ujjain.
Which flights go from Pune to Indore?
IndiGo runs 2–3 non-stops a day and Air India Express runs one, as of late September 2026. They include a 01:10 night departure and a flight landing at 06:40.
Can I catch Bhasma Aarti after the Pune night flight?
We don't recommend it. The flight lands at about 02:30, which leaves too little margin for bags, a 60 km drive and the aarti entry queue. Arrive the day before.
What is the last flight from Indore to Pune?
IndiGo 6E147 departs Indore at 22:10. Confirm the time after the late-October schedule change.
How far in advance should I book a Pune to Ujjain flight?
With only 3–4 flights a day, book about 4–6 weeks ahead on regular dates, and earlier for festivals.
