Omkareshwar is about 85 km from Indore airport by road, roughly 2 to 2.5 hours by car. The route follows the Khandwa Road towards the Narmada, with a winding ghat section near the end. Indore (IDR) is the nearest airport with scheduled flights, whether you visit Omkareshwar alone or with Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain.
Landing at Indore airport? Book your airport pickup to Ujjain / Omkareshwar and your stay
Omkareshwar and Ujjain are the two Jyotirlingas of Madhya Pradesh, and many pilgrims fly into Indore to see both. The key thing to know is geography. From the airport, Ujjain lies to the north and Omkareshwar to the south-east, so they are in opposite directions. Combining them means going back through the Indore area, and the plan needs to be built around that. Distances on this page are road-routing estimates. Published figures range from about 75 to 88 km depending on the exact start and end point.
Indore airport to Omkareshwar: route facts
| Detail | Indore airport (IDR) โ Omkareshwar temple |
|---|---|
| Road distance | About 85 km (estimates range from about 75 to 88 km) |
| Driving time | About 1h 45m in free-flowing traffic; about 2โ2.5 hours typically |
| Route | Via Khandwa Road (NH347BG), then SH36A with a ghat section down towards the Narmada |
| Best way to go | Pre-booked taxi or outstation cab |
| Compared with Ujjain | Ujjain’s Mahakaleshwar is about 60โ62 km from the airport, 1โ1.5 hours, in the opposite direction |
The ghat stretch is slower than the highway, and heavy vehicles use it too. Allow extra time after dark and in the monsoon, when visibility and road surfaces can be poor. Festival days at Omkareshwar, especially around Mahashivratri and in the Shravan month, bring heavy traffic near the temple town.
How to get there from the airport
| Option | What to know |
|---|---|
| Pre-booked taxi | The simplest way. The driver meets you at arrivals and can wait at Omkareshwar and bring you back. Agree the waiting time and return in advance. |
| App cab from the airport | Uber operates pickups at Indore airport 24/7, but its airport fares are published for trips within Indore. For an outstation ride, check the fare and the driver’s willingness to go before you set off. |
| Bus | The Airports Authority lists buses among Indore airport’s transport options, but no route or fare details are published. Buses to Omkareshwar generally leave from Indore’s city bus stands, so you would need a cab into the city first. |
For a family with luggage, a round-trip taxi from the airport is usually the most practical choice. It avoids changing vehicles and gives you a fixed return. We arrange airport pickups on our Indore airport taxi page. Tell us Omkareshwar is your destination when you enquire.

Combining Omkareshwar and Ujjain
Because the two temples are in opposite directions from the airport, the cleanest plans visit one, return through the Indore area and then visit the other. Two common patterns:
- Omkareshwar first (morning arrival): Land in the morning and drive to Omkareshwar for darshan. Stay the night there, or return to Indore. The next day, drive to Ujjain. Book Bhasma Aarti for the following morning, then fly home from Indore.
- Ujjain first (afternoon or evening arrival): Land and go to Ujjain. Do general darshan the next day and Bhasma Aarti the morning after. Then make a day trip to Omkareshwar and spend the last night near Indore airport, or in Indore city, before your flight.
Either way, allow at least three nights to do both temples without rushing. Trying to fit Omkareshwar in between Bhasma Aarti and a same-day flight is the most common mistake we see. It turns a pilgrimage into a long day in a car. Bhasma Aarti can’t be reached the same morning you land from any city, so give Ujjain its own night before the aarti. See Indore airport to Ujjain distance for that leg.
Sample three-night plan for both Jyotirlingas
| Day | Plan | Night |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Morning arrival at IDR; drive about 85 km to Omkareshwar; afternoon darshan and an evening by the Narmada | Omkareshwar |
| Day 2 | Early darshan if you wish; after breakfast, drive back past Indore towards Ujjain; evening general darshan at Mahakaleshwar | Ujjain |
| Day 3 | Bhasma Aarti before dawn (pre-booked); rest; Kal Bhairav, Harsiddhi and Ram Ghat | Ujjain |
| Day 4 | Relaxed morning; drive about 60 km to IDR for a midday or evening flight | Home |
Day 2 is the longest drive of the trip. Break it with lunch in Indore if you have elders with you.
Returning to the airport from Omkareshwar
Work back from your flight. You need about 2โ2.5 hours for the drive, plus time for the airport formalities, plus a buffer for the ghat section and any festival traffic near the temple town. For an evening flight, leaving Omkareshwar around lunchtime is comfortable. For a morning flight, stay near the airport the night before rather than attempting a pre-dawn ghat drive. Our guide to hotels near Indore airport explains the options.
Practical tips
- Start early. Arriving at Omkareshwar before the late-morning rush makes darshan much easier, especially on weekends.
- Carry cash. Small payments near the temple and on the way are often cash-based.
- Summer heat. From April to June, avoid the drive and the temple queues in the hottest part of the afternoon.
- Monsoon. From about July to September, the Narmada runs high and the ghat road needs care. Allow extra time and avoid night drives.
- Airport details. Indore airport runs 24 hours and has two terminals since April 2026. See our Indore airport guide or the AAI Indore airport page for official contacts.
