Key takeaways
- Nalkheda is roughly 150-160 km by road from Indore airport, about 2.5-3.5 hours by car.
- It is about 100 km from Ujjain, so most fly-in pilgrims do Mahakal first and Nalkheda as a day from Ujjain.
- A cab is the practical option; Rome2Rio also lists a train to Sarangpur plus taxi, and a bus of about 4.5 hours.
- Navratri is the busiest time; check temple timings on mabaglamukhi.org before you go.
- Do not plan a same-day flight on a festival day; leave at least 4.5-5 hours for the drive back and check-in.
Indore airport to Nalkheda is roughly 150 to 160 km by road, about 2.5 to 3.5 hours by car, and Nalkheda is about 100 km from Ujjain. Because of that geometry, most fly-in pilgrims do Mahakal darshan in Ujjain first, visit the Baglamukhi temple at Nalkheda as a day from Ujjain, then return to the airport via Ujjain.
This guide is for travellers landing at Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport (IDR) who want darshan of Maa Baglamukhi at Nalkheda alongside the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga. It covers the distance, whether to drive direct or through Ujjain, taxi, train and bus options, a two-day plan, some background on the temple, and how to judge crowd days and the drive back for your flight. If you want flights, the airport pickup and both temples arranged as one trip, our fly-in Ujjain packages can include Nalkheda as an extra day.
How far is Nalkheda from Indore airport?
Nalkheda is a town and tehsil in Agar Malwa district, in the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh, on the Lakhundar river at about 383 m. Wikipedia puts it at about 150 km from Indore by road, and route aggregators show a similar picture: Rome2Rio measures 152.4 km with a drive of about 2 hours 24 minutes (checked 19 October 2026). No source we found measures the trip from the airport itself, so we give a range. The airport is roughly 8 km west of central Indore, which can add a little distance depending on the route your driver takes out of the city.
For planning, use 150 to 160 km and 2.5 to 3.5 hours each way. The lower figure assumes clear roads; the upper one allows for Indore traffic, slower stretches through small towns and a tea stop. If you are heading straight back to catch a flight, use the upper figure.
| From | To Nalkheda (approx.) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Indore | about 150 km by road | Wikipedia |
| Indore (route planner) | 152.4 km, about 2 h 24 min drive | Rome2Rio (aggregator estimate, 19 Oct 2026) |
| Ujjain | about 100 km | Wikipedia |
| Agar | about 35 km | Wikipedia |
| Shajapur | about 62 km | Wikipedia |
| Bhopal | about 180 km | Wikipedia |
All figures are approximate and depend on the exact route, as of October 2026.
Direct from the airport or via Ujjain?
There are two sensible ways to plan the trip, and the right one depends on whether Mahakal is also on your list. MP Tourism puts Indore airport to Ujjain at about 55 km, roughly 1.5 hours. Ujjain to Nalkheda is about another 100 km. Going via Ujjain adds some distance compared with driving direct, but it splits the journey across two days and lets you base yourself in one place.
| Route | Approx. distance | Approx. drive | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| IDR direct to Nalkheda | 150 to 160 km | 2.5 to 3.5 h | Travellers visiting only Baglamukhi, or landing early and flying out the next day |
| IDR to Ujjain, then Ujjain to Nalkheda | about 55 km + about 100 km | about 1.5 h + about 2 to 2.5 h | Pilgrims doing Mahakal darshan too; lets you split the drive over two days |
| Nalkheda back to IDR via Ujjain | about 100 km + about 55 km | about 3.5 to 4 h in total | Day-two return when you stay in Ujjain or want a second Mahakal visit |
| Nalkheda direct back to IDR | 150 to 160 km | 2.5 to 3.5 h | Same-day return to the airport for an evening flight |
Driving direct makes sense if Baglamukhi is the only reason for your trip, or if you land early in the morning and want to be at the temple by midday. It is also the faster way back to the airport for an evening flight. For everyone combining the two temples, Ujjain is the better base. The Ujjain to Nalkheda drive time above is our estimate from the 100 km distance, not a published figure. If you plan to stay in Ujjain, our Indore airport to Ujjain taxi page covers that first leg and the arrivals pickup.
Taxi, train or bus
A car is the most practical way to reach Nalkheda from the airport; public transport means at least one change and some waiting. When we checked on 19 October 2026, Rome2Rio listed three options for the Indore to Nalkheda trip, which we summarise here. Treat its times and prices as aggregator estimates, not official fares or timetables.
| Option | Approx. time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Taxi or outstation cab | about 2.5 to 3.5 h | Door to door from the airport. Rome2Rio's estimate for a direct taxi is about Rs 2,600 to 3,100 one way; actual prices vary by operator, car type, waiting time and return trip |
| Train to Sarangpur, then taxi | about 3 h 5 min (Rome2Rio) | The cheapest option on Rome2Rio. You still need a road transfer from the airport to the station, and onward from Sarangpur to Nalkheda |
| Bus from Indore | about 4 h 30 min | Rome2Rio shows a private operator (SLGT Travels) with around five daily departures; check current timings before relying on it |
For most flyers carrying luggage on a tight schedule, a pre-booked cab that meets you at arrivals and waits at the temple is simpler than any combination of train and bus. Agree the total in advance: the drive, the return, driver waiting time and tolls.
A 2-day fly-in plan: Mahakal + Baglamukhi
This is the plan we suggest for most pilgrims who want both temples without rushing either. It keeps the longest drive on a day with no flight attached, and it puts Ujjain in the middle so you are never more than about 1.5 hours from the airport on the day you fly out.
Day 1: land at IDR and go to Ujjain. Take the airport cab to Ujjain, about 55 km. Check in, rest, and do Mahakaleshwar darshan in the afternoon or evening. If you are hoping to attend Bhasma Aarti, book it well ahead and plan the next morning around it.
Day 2: Ujjain to Nalkheda and back. Leave Ujjain early for the roughly 100 km drive to Nalkheda. Spend the late morning at the Baglamukhi temple, then return to Ujjain for a second night, or drive back toward Indore if you have an evening flight and comfortable margin.
Day 3 (optional): fly out. Ujjain to the airport is about 1.5 hours, which makes an easy departure morning. This is the same shape as our fly-in packages, with Nalkheda added as the extra day. If you have more time, the same base works for south-bound side trips such as Indore airport to Omkareshwar or Indore airport to Maheshwar.
Can you do Ujjain and Nalkheda in one day?
It is possible, but it is a long day. Airport to Ujjain, Ujjain to Nalkheda and Nalkheda back to the airport adds up to more than 300 km and well over six hours of driving before any temple queues. With only one day, pick one temple and give it the time it deserves.
About the Baglamukhi temple at Nalkheda
The temple is dedicated to the goddess Bagalamukhi (commonly spelled Baglamukhi), one of the ten Mahavidyas, who is associated with the colour yellow. The shrine stands on the bank of the Lakhundar river at Nalkheda. According to the Bagalamukhi Temple, Nalkheda article, the present structure was restored in 1815.
Nalkheda is one of three historically noted Bagalamukhi shrines in India. The other two are at Datia and at Bankhandi in Kangra. When you search online or book a cab, make sure the results refer to Nalkheda in Agar Malwa district, because pages about the Datia shrine often use similar keywords.
Many visitors come to perform puja or havan here, and devotees hold a wide range of beliefs about the goddess's blessings. Those are matters of faith rather than anything we can vouch for; if you plan a ritual, discuss the details and any charges directly with the temple. The temple's own website is mabaglamukhi.org.
Crowd days and getting back for your flight
The temple is especially popular during Navratri, when queues and road traffic around Nalkheda grow. If your trip falls in Navratri, add extra time on both the drive and the darshan, and avoid scheduling a same-day flight. Some unofficial guides also describe Tuesdays as busier; we could not confirm this from an official source, so treat it as a tip rather than a rule.
We also could not confirm current temple opening and closing times from an official page. Check them on mabaglamukhi.org or ask locally before you set off, especially if you plan to arrive early or late in the day.
| Your flight out | Last sensible time to leave Nalkheda | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Same day, evening | At least 4.5 to 5 h before departure | Up to 3.5 h of driving plus airport check-in and a traffic buffer |
| Same day, during Navratri | Not recommended | Temple queues and road traffic are harder to predict |
| Next morning, staying in Ujjain | Any time in the afternoon | About 2 to 2.5 h to Ujjain, then about 1.5 h to IDR next day |
| Next morning, staying in Indore | Afternoon | 2.5 to 3.5 h to Indore; the airport is about 8 km from the centre |
These buffers are our planning advice, not airline rules; follow your airline's own check-in deadline.
