This page was rewritten on 5 October 2026 because an earlier version gave figures that did not agree with each other. It covers the road from Indore, mainly from the airport, to the Mahakaleshwar temple. If you only need the airport to Ujjain city leg, our Indore Airport to Ujjain distance page covers it. Distances, times and fares below are ranges taken from named sources, not a single exact number.
Indore to Mahakaleshwar distance: the answer by source
Every source we checked lands in the same band, 55 to 60 km, but they start and end at slightly different points. That is why you will see 57, 58 and 58.6 on different pages for what feels like the same trip.
| Source | Figure | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Rome2rio | 58.6 km by road | Indore Airport (IDR) to Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga |
| Our sister guide (ujjaintourandtravel.com, updated 16 Aug 2026) | About 58 km | Indore airport to Ujjain, taxi guide |
| Travelfika (undated) | 55-60 km | Indore to Mahakaleshwar |
| distancesfrom.com (search snippet) | About 57 km | Indore airport to the temple; snippet only |
Three things explain the spread. First, the airport is not in the city centre. Wikipedia places Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport at Bijasen Tekri, about 8 km west of Indore, so a city-centre start gives a different number from an airport start. Second, the end point changes: a temple gate, a hotel near the Mahakal Lok Corridor and Ujjain city centre are not the same spot. Third, mapping tools pick different roads. You can read more about the airport itself on Wikipedia's page for the airport.
For planning, use 55 to 60 km and add margin. We do not give a single exact distance, because no source we trust does, and the temple end of the trip depends on where the car is allowed to stop.
How long it takes by taxi, bus and train
There is no direct train or bus from the airport to Ujjain, according to Rome2rio. Taxi is the only door-to-door option; bus and train need a transfer first to Indore Junction or a bus stand in the city. The table pulls the figures together, and the bus and train times are modelled by Rome2rio, not published timetables, so hedge them.
| Mode | Time | Fare | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taxi | 52 minutes | Rs 1,100-1,400 | Rome2rio (modelled) |
| Taxi | About 1.5 hours, or 80-100 minutes depending on traffic | Pre-booked cab Rs 1,100-1,800 | Our sister guide, updated 16 Aug 2026 |
| Taxi | 1-1.5 hours | See the fare table below | Travelfika (undated) |
| Bus | 3 h 29 min including the transfer | Rs 610-1,013 | Rome2rio (modelled) |
| Bus | 1.5-2 hours | Rs 60-150 | Travelfika; our sister guide for the fare |
| Train | 3 h 7 min | Rs 151-1,129 | Rome2rio, Indore Junction to Ujjain Junction |
The taxi times broadly agree: roughly an hour in good traffic and up to an hour and a half when roads are busy. The bus figures look far apart, probably because Rome2rio's number includes the transfer from the airport while Travelfika's is the ride alone. The 3 hours 7 minutes by train starts at Indore Junction and ends at Ujjain Junction, so it does not include the trip from the airport to the station.
If you have luggage, small children or elderly parents, the taxi is almost always the practical choice, because a bus or train adds two changes. If you are travelling light and are not in a hurry, the bus is the low-cost option our sister guide lists at Rs 60-150.
Which mode suits which traveller
This table is our reading of the figures above and not a rule. It is meant to help you choose quickly.
| Traveller | Better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Family with bags or elderly parents | Pre-booked taxi | One vehicle from the airport, no transfers, a driver who knows the drop point |
| Group of five or more | SUV taxi | Travelfika lists SUV and premium SUV bands; one vehicle can be cheaper than two sedans |
| Solo traveller, light bag, flexible time | Bus or train after a transfer | Lower fares in the sources, but you add a change and extra time |
| Late-night arrival | Pre-booked taxi | Public options need a transfer; ask about the night charge |
Whichever you choose, add time at the airport. A drive of 1 to 1.5 hours often becomes two hours or more between landing and reaching a hotel, once you collect bags, find the vehicle and allow for traffic. That is our own estimate, not a source figure, but it is a safer basis for planning a darshan or check-in than the drive time alone.
What taxis cost and what to confirm
Taxi fares for this route are published as ranges, and they differ by vehicle type, by whether you pre-book and by what is included. We do not publish a fixed fare of our own here. The table shows what each source reports, with the date where one is given.
| Source | Range reported | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Rome2rio | Rs 1,100-1,400 by taxi | Fetched 5 Oct 2026 |
| Our sister guide | Pre-booked cab Rs 1,100-1,800; airport prepaid or on-the-spot taxi Rs 1,300-2,200 | Updated 16 Aug 2026 |
| Travelfika | Hatchback Rs 900-1,200; sedan Rs 1,200-1,500; SUV Rs 1,500-1,900; premium SUV from Rs 2,000 | Undated |
The ranges overlap but are not identical, and the airport counter rate is higher than the pre-booked rate in the sister guide's figures. Before you accept any quote, confirm these points in writing or on the booking screen:
- Toll and parking: are they included or paid extra at the plaza?
- Night charge: does the fare change for late-night or early-morning pickups?
- Waiting time: how long will the driver wait if your flight is delayed?
- Vehicle type: does the quote match the car that arrives, and does it fit your luggage?
- Drop point: is the fare to your hotel, to the temple area or to Ujjain city?
If you want a taxi arranged before you land, see our Indore airport to Ujjain taxi page, or use Get a quote. Either way, ask for the inclusions in the same message as the price.
A quick per-kilometre check
Dividing the reported fares by the reported distance gives a sense check, and this is our own arithmetic, not a published rate. Rs 1,100 to Rs 1,800 over about 58 km works out to roughly Rs 19 to Rs 31 per kilometre. Travelfika's sedan range of Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,500 over 55 to 60 km is roughly Rs 20 to Rs 27 per kilometre. A quote far above that band, or far below it, deserves a question about what is and is not included, such as toll or the return leg.
Route and where the car drops you
Sources describe the route differently, and highway numbers vary between pages, so follow your driver or a maps app instead of a number from a blog. Travelfika describes the route as going by NH47 via the Dewas bypass; a search snippet places Sanwer roughly 20 km along the highway, about the midpoint; and another site mentions a different highway number. We cannot confirm which is right, so we do not give a highway number as fact. Sanwer and Dewas both appear in the route descriptions.
The drop point matters more than the highway. Vehicle access around the Mahakal Lok Corridor and the temple is managed, so a taxi may be allowed only up to a nearby point, with a short walk or an e-vehicle for the last stretch. Treat that as general guidance and confirm it on the day. If you are staying at a hotel, ask the hotel which entrance the car can reach and give the driver that name. A hotel close to Mahakal also shortens the last stretch.
What the distance means for your day
Distance on its own does not tell you when you will arrive, so here are two illustrations using the ranges above. They are our own planning examples, with an assumed 45 to 60 minutes to leave the airport, and not source figures.
- Morning landing at 08:00: add about 45 to 60 minutes at the airport and a 1 to 1.5 hour drive, and you reach Ujjain roughly between 09:45 and 10:30. That suits a hotel drop and a late-morning temple visit, but not an early darshan slot.
- Evening landing at 20:00: the same arithmetic puts you in Ujjain between about 21:45 and 22:30, which is why a late-night arrival is best paired with a pre-booked taxi and a hotel that expects you.
Darshan rules, timings and any advance passes are set by the temple, so check the official Mahakaleshwar site before you plan the first day around a flight. Also tell the driver your flight number when you pre-book, so a delay does not cancel the pickup.
Planning the flight buffer
If you are travelling the other way, from Ujjain to catch a flight from Indore, the 1-1.5 hour drive is only part of the plan. Our own guidance is to leave Ujjain about three hours before the flight departs. That covers the drive, the slower end of the range, traffic into Indore and time in the terminal. It is our rule of thumb and not an airline rule, so check your airline's check-in cut-off and allow more on festival days, when roads near the temple are busier.
We cover the timing in more detail in our Ujjain to Indore airport drop timing guide. For arrivals, our Indore airport guide for Ujjain pilgrims explains what to do once you land, from the exit to finding your car.
